Critics Choice Awards 2025: Zoe Saldaña and Jacques Audiard ignore Karla Sofía Gascón in their winning speeches
Karla Sofía Gascón has been separated from the “Emilia Pérez” awards campaign after her offensive tweets resurfaced.
The Critic's Choice Awards 2025 were yesterday, and as it was expected, the Emilia Perez cast was in everyone's sight. After their victory at the Golden Globes, where they won almost all the categories they were nominated for; Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez was the favorite of the season to win at the Oscars (even after many complaints from the Latino and Trans community for harmful representation), but everything changed when some of Karla Sofia Gascón's racists and xenophobe tweets resurfaced.

That may be why, when Zoe Saldaña came to the podium to receive her award for Best Supporting Actress, she did not acknowledge her co-star and main protagonist of the Emilia Pérez movie, Karla Sofía Gascón. In Saldaña's speech, she regarded the win as an "incredible honor" at the Barker Hanger in Los Angeles. She also thanked her supporters and collaborators, and specially, her family.
"To my fellow nominees, the films this year and the work you've all done. It's breathtaking," she said. "I will forever be proud to be among you. Thank you to all of you. I can't see you, but you f---ing rock".

Emilia Pérez's second victory of the night was the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Film, for which the movie's director, Jacques Audiard, came to the podium. He also did not acknowledge Karla Sofia Gascon's role in the movie, nor her absence at the awards ceremony.
In his speech, he said he was extremely grateful for his "magnificent cast, my composers [...], my dear choreographer [...], my talented technicians and craft people".
Emilia Pérez would also win its third and final award of the night for Best Song for "El mal"
The Karla Sofía Gascón Scandal
The Emilia Pérez's actress has been all everyone is talking about, and for good reason. A couple of weeks ago, some of Karla Sofía Gascón´s old tweets have resurfaced, and they show very concerning and offensive statements in Spanish. These tweets threaten to derail the film’s Oscar campaign; for which it had 13 Oscar nominations last month, and it leads this year's pack, just one short of matching the record.
In those tweets, Gascon critiques the Oscars, the #BlackLivesMatter movements and has racial and xenophobe comments against Koreans and Muslims. Not only that, she also slandered her co-star, Selena Gomez, and called her a "rich rat" who "plays the poor bastard".
Even though, Karla Sofía Gascón has apologized in a CNN interview in Spanish, public opinion is not on her side. She has already deleted her X account and Netflix has dropped her for the “Emilia Pérez” awards campaign.
