The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) has expanded REAL ID appointment availability, adding 1,432 extra slots per day at Driver Services Centers statewide. The REAL ID Act requires individuals 18 and older to have a REAL ID-compliant credential if they plan to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, military bases, or nuclear facilities. Officials are encouraging those who still need a REAL ID to take advantage of the increased appointment availability before the last-minute rush.
Commissioner Jeff Long urged residents to schedule their appointments early to avoid last-minute delays and long wait times. To apply for a REAL ID, individuals must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence, their Social Security Number, and two documents proving Tennessee residency.
While obtaining a REAL ID is optional, non-REAL ID licenses will still be valid for purposes such as driving, purchasing alcohol and tobacco, voting, and accessing federal benefits. However, residents who decide not to get a REAL ID will need an alternative federally accepted identification, such as a valid passport, to fly within the U.S.
