As of May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. This regulation stems from the Real ID Act, enacted in 2005 following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, which aims to enhance national security by establishing minimum security standards for state-issued identification.

With the enforcement date rapidly approaching, it’s essential to verify whether your driver’s license is Real ID-compliant. Failure to present a valid form of ID could lead to travel disruptions and restricted access to government facilities. Here’s everything you need to know to determine if your license meets the new federal standards.

How to identify a Real ID-compliant driver's license

A Real ID-compliant driver’s license is typically marked with a distinctive symbol in the upper right corner. However, the specific design varies by state:

  • Standard Marking: Most states display a black or gold star in the upper right corner.
  • California: Uses a golden bear with a white star as its Real ID indicator.
  • Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs): Issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington, these licenses do not feature a star but are Real ID-compliant and display a U.S. flag instead.

If your driver’s license does not have one of these indicators, it may not be Real ID-compliant. In that case, you may need to apply for a new compliant license or use an alternative form of federally accepted identification, such as a valid passport or military ID for air travel and government facility access.

How to get a Real ID in the US?

If your current driver’s license is not Real ID-compliant, you should apply for an updated version before the May 7, 2025, deadline. Here’s how:

1. Gather Required Documentation

To obtain a Real ID, you must visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide:

  • Proof of Identity: A valid passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
  • Social Security Number: A Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with your SSN.
  • Proof of State Residency: Two documents, such as utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements, showing your current address.

2. Visit Your Local DMV

Unlike standard license renewals, obtaining a Real ID requires an in-person visit to your state’s DMV office. Some states may allow you to start the application process online, but final verification must be done in person.

3. Pay the Required Fee

The cost of a Real ID varies by state, but typically ranges from $30 to $60, depending on whether you are renewing or upgrading your current license.

4. Receive Your New Real ID

Once your documents are verified and payment is processed, your Real ID will be mailed to you within a few weeks. Some states may issue a temporary paper license until your new compliant license arrives.

Don't wait until the deadline! Get your Real ID!

With the Real ID enforcement date fast approaching, it’s crucial to check your license now and apply for an updated version if necessary. Long wait times and processing delays are expected as the deadline nears, so early application is highly recommended.

To confirm whether your current driver’s license is Real ID-compliant, check for the star or state-specific marking in the upper right corner. If your license lacks this indicator, visit your local DMV to upgrade before May 7, 2025, and ensure smooth travel and federal facility access in the future.
