The opening of these new locations is part of the ambitious plan of the country’s largest retailer, which includes not only new store openings but also the reopening of remodelled locations designed to better meet customer needs. “Over the next five years, Walmart plans to build or convert more than 150 stores while simultaneously continuing our program to remodel existing locations,” John Furner, CEO of Walmart, told Newsweek.

Why is Walmart opening new stores?

In addition to improving access to everyday essentials for underserved areas near its new stores, Walmart promotes its expansion as a boost to local communities by supporting suppliers, driving economic growth and generating jobs.

Walmart's CEO said that the company brings "hundreds of jobs" to a community with each new store opening, adding: "Those jobs come with amazing perks, like tuition-free college starting on day one, or flexible scheduling and competitive paid time off."

More plans to benefit customers

In addition to opening new locations, Walmart has announced plans to remodel 650 stores in 47 states and Puerto Rico. Of these, 17 were reopened in November following an investment of over $500 million.

With these remodels, the stores are expected to feature enhanced designs, a broader range of products, and cutting-edge technology to improve the shopping experience and streamline payments, avoiding long checkout lines, one of the main reasons why many Americans have turned to online shopping or competitors.
