Attention, New York! What Is the Real ID Deadline? Everything you need to know in 2025
Discover everything you need to know about New York’s REAL ID deadline in 2025. Learn how to upgrade your license and meet federal requirements before May 7.
Starting May 7, 2025, New York residents will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an Enhanced ID to board domestic flights, access military bases, and enter certain federal facilities. This federal requirement stems from the REAL ID Act, designed to enhance security measures for state-issued identification.
For those relying on standard driver’s licenses, the countdown is on to upgrade to a compliant form of identification. Here’s everything you need to know about the deadline, requirements, and how to prepare.
What is the REAL ID Act?
The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued identification documents. The goal is to ensure that identification used for federal purposes is both reliable and secure.
Starting May 7, 2025, standard state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs will no longer be accepted for specific purposes, including: Boarding domestic flights within the United States and accessing military bases or federal facilities.
"Beginning on May 7, 2025, the federal government will require your driver license, permit or ID card to be REAL ID compliant", the DMV said in a statement.
Without a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, individuals will need to present an alternate federally approved identification, such as a U.S. passport.
How to Upgrade to a REAL ID or Enhanced ID
Applying for a REAL ID or Enhanced ID requires an in-person visit to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Applicants must bring the following documents:
- Proof of Identity: Examples include a valid passport or birth certificate.
- Social Security Number: Proof of your Social Security Number or documentation of ineligibility.
- Proof of New York Residency: Two documents, such as utility bills or a rental agreement, demonstrating your current address.
