The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced it will distribute approximately $2.4 billion in stimulus payments to around 1 million taxpayers across the United States. These payments are part of an initiative to help individuals who missed claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on their 2021 tax returns.

With amounts reaching up to $1,400 per person, this effort ensures that eligible taxpayers receive the financial support they were entitled to during the pandemic. Here’s what you need to know about eligibility, distribution methods, and how to claim your payment if you qualify.

Who is eligible to receive the IRS stimulus checks?

The stimulus payments target taxpayers who:

  • Filed their 2021 tax return but did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) field.
  • Were eligible for the credit but either left the field blank or entered $0 by mistake.

"Looking at your internet data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex when they were actually eligible", Danny Werfel, IRS Commissioner, said in a news release. "To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we're making this payments automatic, meaning these people will not required to go through the extensive process of filling an amended return to receive it".

To qualify for the full $1,400 payment, individuals must meet the following income requirements:

  • Single Filers: Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of up to $75,000.
  • Married Filing Jointly: AGI of up to $150,000.

The payment phases out for individuals with incomes above these thresholds.

Can you still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit?

Yes, taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax return can still claim the RRC by submitting it before the April 15, 2025, deadline. This allows those who were unaware of their eligibility to secure the stimulus payment.

"Eligible taxpayers who did not file must a tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit, even if their income from a job, business or other source was minimal or non-existent", according to the IRS.

How and When will the stimulus checks be distributed?

  • Automatic Distribution: Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive their payments.
  • Payment Methods: Funds will be deposited directly into bank accounts or mailed as paper checks, using the information provided on 2023 tax returns.
  • Timeline: The IRS began issuing these payments in December 2024, with most recipients expected to receive their funds by late January 2025.
